比較
He was harder to please than I had thought/expected (he was).
彼は私が思ってたより気難しい人だ。

Fires are not so frightening as they used to be.
The beard made him appear much older than he actually was.

比較文は二つの文を合わせたものである。
・He is diligent.
・He used to be diligent.
をあわせて、
He is less diligent than he used to be.
と作る。

He has as much energy as anyone I've ever met.
彼は私が出会った誰にも劣らず活発的だ。

実質、最上級にしちゃうパターン。
You never feel so helpless as (you do) when you watch your child suffer.
= Nothing makes you feel so helpless as watching your child suffer.
自分の子どもが苦しむのを観る時ほど、自分が情けなく思う時はないでしょう。

It is not so much A as B.
「Aというよりも、むしろB」

superior, inferiorはthanじゃなくて前置詞toを使う。

否定語+so much as
S cannot so much as V. …SはVさえできない。
Without so much as -ing. …-さえすること無しに

prefer -ing to '-ing …'-するより-することを好む
prefer to V rather than (to) V' …V'するよりVすることを好む

prior to ～ = before ～

クジラ構文(コウモリ構文)
A is no more ～ than B (is) ～
Bについてはありえないと思われるモノを引き合いにする。
"no more"=「差がない」=「同様に」
「AはBと同様に～ない」
= A is not ～ any more than B.

"" A whale is no more a fish than a horse is. ""
「クジラが魚であるというのは、馬がそれであるというのと同じだ」
→「馬が魚でないように、クジラも魚ではない」

A collection of facts is not science any more than a dictionary is poetry.
「辞書が詩じゃないように、事実の寄せ集めが科学なのではない。」

Sunlight is no less nessary to good health than fresh air.


I have no more than $500. …私は500ドルしか、持ってない
I have no less than $500. …私は500ドルも持ってる。

名詞があるのになんとかではない。

Vしないくらい分別がある。
「Vする程バカじゃない」

肯定文, much/still more A
～である。Aは尚更だ。

否定文, much/still less A
～ではない。Aは尚更違う。

否定・倒置
so <形容詞、副詞> that SV …SVする程<形,副>である(実際SVである)
否定文+so <形,副> that SV …SVする程<‥>ではない(実際SVしてない)

	I am not so tired that I can't walk any further.
	これ以上歩けないという程の疲れじゃない。

	Nothing is so difficult that it cannot be accomplished by diligence.
	勤勉によって達せられない程難しいものなど無い。


Mary's astonishment was such that she couldn't speak.
「S(Maryの驚き)は凄いのでS'V'(彼女は喋れなかった)」
＝「Maryは喋れなくなる程、驚いた」
＝「驚きのあまり、彼女は口を聞けなくなった」

S is such that S'V'. = Such is S that S'V'.

	Such was Mary's astonishment that she couldn't speak.


"such that"と"too to"は意味が真逆になる。

	He was too experienced to make such a silly mistake.
	彼はとても熟練しているので、そんなバカげた間違いを犯さない。

"so that"は"such that"と大体同じだ。

	His report was written in so careless a manner that I refused to read it.
	彼のレポートはあまりにも杜撰な書き方なので、私は読むことを拒否した。


It was not until several years after his death that he became known as a poet.
彼の死後、数年経ってようやく、彼は詩人として知られることになった。

It is not until 名詞 / SV' / 副詞 that SV".
「～になってようやく、SV"。」

"until"の"un"って否定語っぽいのに"till"と同じ意味だからこんがらがる。
大体"till"って普通に単語帳に出てくるくせに使われてる文章見たことないし。

Nobody can translate it into Japanese without damaging its beauty.
「それの美しさを損なうコトなく日本語に訳せる人なんて居ない。」

withoutは前置詞だから、当然その後には名詞が続く。

S cannot/never V without -ing.
SがVすると必ず-しちゃう。

否定の副詞句/節 を文頭に置いた倒置
否定の副詞句/節を文頭において、倒置文を続けた言い方。
否定の強調である。
倒置文は疑問文と同じ語順である。

Never did I dream of meeting you here.
「ここでアナタと会うなんて夢にも見なかった。」
"never"の強い否定のニュアンスを汲んで「夢にも」なんて
訳した。

Under no circumstances must the door be left open.
「どんな状況でもそのドアは開けっ放しにされてはいけない。」

「前置詞+no/little/few+名詞」が否定の副詞句として働く。

"Only"は準否定の副詞である。

Only recently did I become to able to understand the book.
「最近になってようやく、私はその本を理解できるようになった。」

Not until he died, did he became known as a poet.
「彼が死ぬまで彼は詩人として知られることはなかった」

「Not until+SV」が一つの副詞句として働いている。その後に倒置文
が続くんだけど、SVと並べたらわかりにくいからカンマで区切る。

Only after passing the exam, they become students.
「その試験の通って初めて生徒になる。」

会話における倒置。
I'm glad.(肯定)
	- So am I.(「私もです」)
I'm not a college student.(否定)
	- Neither am I.(「私も違うよ」)
You look tired.
	- So I am.(「実際そうなんです」)
